It should have been another ordinary Saturday morning. The perfect weather for sleeping in a little later. Well, you know the drill.
But this time, I was up and at my gym around 9am.
Not how I like to spend my Saturday morning but well, there is a special reason for it.
You see, every now and then, in the Singapore CrossFit scene, different box (slang for a CrossFit gym) will conduct their version of a competition. The goal of this event is simply to test the physical strength and endurance of the athletes or CrossFitters.
Naturally, the members will give their 100% and have a friendly competition with each other.
While they’re constantly trying to outdo each other, you can almost feel the competitive spirit in the air, they’re also encouraging each other to push and grind through. That doesn’t mean safety is ever neglected. It’s always amazing to see the athletes look out for each other, even though they “secretly” want the other to perform one rep less than them.
At the same time, a CrossFit Open gives each athlete a clearer understanding on their progress training in the gym.
It’s a clear cut data that lets you know how much you’ve improved since the last competition you took part in.
While my gym, Iron Fitness Singapore, had been conducting this competition over the week, that particular Saturday morning was a little extra special.
You see, one of the members, had invited MP Teo Ser Luck down to visit the gym and watch some of the members compete.
It was rather surprising and inspirational that he agreed. And his presence was definitely a welcoming one for all of us gathered there.
Because we know how tedious and tiring it can be for MPs as their schedule is usually packed from morning to evening. In fact, he even told us had meetings and places to visit right up to 11pm and it was mostly the same on Sunday. (Kudos to our MPs, think not many people appreciate them enough)
In any case, he shared a little about the difficulty it is to slot in some workout time. Kinda puts me to shame since I haven’t been training that hard. But you could tell that he still tries to keep himself physically fit.
So, as a special thank you, our head coach gave him a pair of training tees which he gracefully wore to take a group photo.
So, who says your MP doesn’t listen.
On a more serious note, it may be time I start hitting the iron again. Oh, just the thought of the aches from doing backsquats, benchpress, deadlifts and the various snatches is enough to send me in agony.
But if you’re thinking of trying out CrossFit, do let me know. I’ll try to talk to my head coach and see if he can conduct a special class if we can get enough people interested.
